Project Description
Cyanobium represent a unique transitional group in RubisCO evolution. It has been known for some time that some strains of marine Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus contain a Form IA RubisCO (ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase) more similar to that of proteobacteria than to the Form IB found in other cyanobacteria. Strains of Cyanobium from both fresh water and marine environments also contain this unique RubisCO. Further, the Cyanobium strains appear to be ancestral to the Form IA containing Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus groups, indicating that the novel RubisCO probably originated in the Cyanobium.

Cyanobium PCC 6307 is the type strain of Cyanobium gracile, has been in culture since 1949, physiological information that will be useful when interpreting the genome sequence. Cyanobium PCC 7001 was isolated from intertidal waters off Long Island in 1961, and has also been well studied. According to 16S rRNA data, these strains are from different portions of the Cyanobium family, with different phylotypes, different environments of origin, and unequal genome sizes sized genomes.
