Blastocystis hominis, the only Stramenopile which can cause disease in humans, has a 10 Mb genome. The DNA will be extracted from karyotypic bands and utilized for the preparation of plasmid libraries and a mini-BAC library. The genomic sequence data will be of enormous benefit to the study of metabolic adaptations and to that of the evolution of an anaerobic eukaryote, as well as to the search for virulence and zoonotic transfer factors.
