Project Description
Widespread in the marine environment; P. tunicata produces novel secondary metabolites. These metabolites inhibit the colonisation and growth of a number of common marine fouling organisms; believed important as a natural fouling defence for sessile marine organisms from which P. tunicata has been isolated (Holmstrom et al 1998, Int. J. Syst. Bact. 48: 1205-1212; Egan et al, 2000 Environ. Microbiol. 2: 343-347). Also detected in planktonic waters from northern and southern hemispheres (Lovejoy et al, 1998 Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 64:2806-2813; Skovhus et al 2004, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 70: 2373-2382)
