Benthic cyanobacterium, forming microbial mats in coastal intertidal sediments (sometimes also subtidal) all over the world. Fixes N2 aerobically; in light-dark cycles confined to dark period. Possess both uptake and bidirectional hydrogenases, heterolactic and homoacetic fermentation, oxidizes sulfide and reduces elemental sulfur. Contains polyhydroxyalkanoate.
